Latin Students Take Part in Virgil Vigil - Part 2

Kid Spree 2012

On Saturday, April 28, 2012, both Middle School and Upper School students from Rocky Hill School took part in the second annual Vergil Vigil.  This group of about 20 students and Matt Gnolfo, Chair of the Foreign Language Department and Upper School Latin Teacher, read all 12 books of the Aeneid, Vergil's epic poem about the founding of Rome, in 12 hours.  The bleary-eyed students finished reading Robert Fitzgerald's translation in just under 12 hours, capping off a night of intense reading and acting out of certain scenes.  Rocky Hill students were able to raise more than $700 that was, in turn, donated to the Global Literacy Foundation (GLF).  This was the second consecutive year that Rocky Hill students were able to partner with the GLF (http://globalliteracy.org), and the event was a huge success.

Charitable funds raised from this event were sent to The Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley in Sacaton, Arizona.  The Sacaton Branch has a daily average of 115 members between the ages of 5-18. The Club opened its doors to the Gila River Indian Community in 1997 and draws its members directly from the surrounding community. The local middle and elementary schools provide transportation via bus for youth, and members also walk from one of many surrounding housing projects. While the youth are at the Club they participate in Arts & Crafts projects, Physical Education Activities, Computer Education, Social Recreation and National Boys & Girls Club Programs (e.g., Homework Help, Prevention Programs, Leadership Clubs).

On Saturday, July 28th the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley-Sacaton Branch had the opportunity to take 30 youth and teens, ages 5-16, on a back-to-school shopping trip at Target for new school clothes. Thirty members were selected because of their participation in Boys & Girls Club programs, attitude and need. On Saturday morning, these 30 members arrived at the Boys & Girls Club at 6am and were transported to the Target in Chandler. Once they arrived, they were teamed up with mentors and volunteers from the local High School. Vechij Himdag MashchamakuD (VHM) assisted them with shopping for school clothes with a $125 budget. Once they completed shopping they had breakfast with their mentor and received a backpack with school supplies.

Without the generous donation from Global Literacy Foundation the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley-Sacaton Branch would not have been financial able to give 30 members the opportunity to go back to school shopping. All the members are extremely thankful for this opportunity as they would not have received new clothes for the new school year.
